Reasons That Make this Project
Unique and Inspiring

1. There are hundreds of different ways to find success.  For example, see the Domino Analogy, below.

2. Success can come from modifying any of the many already existing birth control pills, or from modifying any the many already existing injectable contraceptives.

3. There are approximately 100 or more already known and already proven birth control pills or formulas from which to work.  We are by no means starting from scratch.

4. One pill can often work for many different species of animals at the same time; we may not need to find a different pill for every different species in need.

5. When we find the pill, we will likely be able to set its price since we would probably own or co-own the patent.

6. This Project is, in fact, a very rare opportunity to produce a massive and positive impact on a global level -- all in one fell swoop.

7. Unlike most projects that provide short-term solutions, success in this project can bring about a permanent end to the problem of over-population.

8. Unlike most projects, we can succeed and realize success
in our own lifetime.

9. Last, but not least, if we were to compare this project to a football game in which a touchdown is victory, then finding the pill is a touchdown.  Put another way, it can be said that we are at the 99 yard line, with only one yard to go for victory.

An elaboration of each of the above-listed points:

Good news #1

The Domino Effect -- There are many different ways of finding success.

Think of the process of conception as a long line of dominos lined up, each one directly behind the other, in perfect order. In simple terms, in order for conception to occur a long series of actions and reactions needs to take place at the correct time in the correct order and in the correct way.  If any of these "dominos" become modified  enough and do not take place at the correct time, in the correct order and in the correct way and in the correct amount, then conception will not occur.

The process must start with the first domino and end with the last domino in perfect order. It is to our benefit that with dogs this sequence of events cannot happen every day -- it can only happen one time every six months. For example, the egg has to successfully move from one location to a second location and do so at a specific time, and it then has to attach itself in a particular way to a particular part of the body. The sperm have to be fertile, they have to reach the egg at a particular time, they have to penetrate the egg wall, etc.

The good news is that we only need to change one of these dominos -- and it can be any one of them. There are also many different ways to change each domino. For example, with respect to the implantation of the egg, make the wall of the uterus too slippery or too hard; make the wall of the egg too slippery or too hard; find six different chemicals that all make the wall too hard, or that cause hormone # 5 or # 6 or # 7 to over produce, or under produce, or not produce at all. Any one of these can break the chain and bring success.

Another example: The first two dominos are hormone #1 and hormone #2, both produced in the brain. Let's say hormone #1 has to be produced in the 6th month of the year, and at least 5 micrograms of it have to be produced, but not more than 10 micrograms, in order for it to properly trigger hormone #2.  If too little or too much of hormone #1 is produced, then the chain is broken, or if the correct amount is produced, but produced too early or too late in the six month cycle, then the chain will also be broken.

If each domino has to produce hormone X, we can prevent conception by doing the following to any domino:

1. Under-produce hormone X
2. Over-produce hormone X
3. Produce it too early
4. Produce it too late
5. Produce a substantially changed or modified version of hormone X

Any of the above five changes above can result in success.

Apply all of the five possible changes above to each one of all of the dominos, and we begin to see how many opportunities there are for success.

If we restricted ourselves to only the first 10 dominos, with five possible changes to each domino, we would have a possible field of 50 different chemicals or formulas for success.

Perhaps this is one of the reasons there are already over 100 known contraceptives for humans.

Consider this:  ContraPest is a formula that permanently knocks out one of the dominos in several species of mammals, including rats. It destroys the follicle hairs in the uterus. These follicles just happen to not be replaceable, so once they are gone, they are gone forever, and conception is impossible.  This is an example of how one formula has knocked out one domino, resulting in success.

The problem with ContraPest, however, is that this formula is owned by a private company, and they say it will take years before they get around to applying this for usage in dogs.

In addition, even if or when they finally do get around to helping stray dogs, they will control the patent and they will set the price. History has shown that as a for-profit corporation, solely responsible to their shareholders under U.S. law, they will in all likelyhood price it at the same price point as a spay/neuter surgery.

Naturally there could be two, three, four, five, or a dozen or more different chemical formals that all also destroy the follicles.  Just as there are different drugs on the market to combat headaches (Ibuprofen, Aspirin, Aleve, Tylenol, etc.), there also must certainly be different ways to prevent conception.

Good news #2

To achieve success we only need to modify any of the many, already-existing 1 to 7 day pills into a 180 day pill.

There are approximately 50 birth control pills that last at least one day, which have already been approved for human use.  Modifying any of these to last 180 days, could bring the success we need, as many birth control formulas work on more than one species.

Good news #3

To achieve success we only need to modify any of the many, already-existing, long-lasting injectables into a long-lasting pill.

Already-known injectables last as long as one year, two years, three years, and up to ten years. There is even at least one injectable already approved by the U.S. government that is not simply a one-year or ten-year shot, but a permanent shot (Neutersol).  One dose results in permanent sterilization.

Good news #4

There are already approximately 100 known different birth control formulas.

Many of these have already been approved for use in humans. This is a good base for us to work from. We can benefit from this and do not have to start from zero.  An incredible amount of knowledge on this topic already exists.  Modifying just one of the 100 formulas to last 180 days could bring success. Many of these drugs have been around for so long that they are now generics and are not protected by patents, allowing us to use them relatively freely. The longer a chemical has been known, the better it is for us, because this usually means more information about it has been documented (versus an unknown chemical).

Good news #5

One formula works for many species.  It is common for a single birth control formula to cause birth control in many species of mammals.  Frequently, a single birth control formula works not only in dogs, but also in cats, deer, horses, pigs, squirrels, seals, rabbits, etc.

Good news #6

The football analogy --  If victory were defined as finding a pill to end over-population and to end the suffering of billions of animals, and if this were a football game and we needed to carry the ball 100 yards to get to victory, then it can be said that today we are at the 99 yard line, with only one more yard to go, to emerge victorious!

We are at the final yard; the final 36 inches. We already have birth control pills that last 7 days.  All we need to do is add 163 days to those pills, and we will have victory.

Good news #7

When we find this formula we may own the patent, which would allow us to set the price.

This would ensure that the millions of strays in the world would be helped now, not later, at the convenience of a purely profit-motivated company. This product could be sold to those who otherwise might not be able to afford it, and the proceeds will be used to benefit the work of humane societies and charities. It is likely that the cost to produce the pill will be under one dollar per dose when produced in significant quantities.

Good news #8

This is a very rare opportunity to reduce massive suffering on a global scale in a single "shot." See the Background, below.

Background:

The two leading global causes of animal suffering and death are:

1st: Farm animals used for food. Well over 10 billion animals are raised and slaughtered for food annually.

2nd: Over-populated animals. Approximately one billion are killed annually due to their over-population.

There are entire industries that vigorously interfere with and oppose efforts to improve the living and dying conditions for billions of farm animals. Efforts by the humane community to reduce animal suffering and death are fought against at every turn. The failure rate of the humane community here is extremely high, and decades of work have produced little benefit.

As such, success in ending "the #1 cause of animal suffering and death in the world" is not up to just us; and it is outside the scope of this Project.

The situation with over-populated animals is, however, very different: only a few, smaller industries oppose change.
If we can find the right pill, we should be able to administer and implement change successfully, thus reducing vast amounts of pain and suffering in a very short period of time.

This is not simply an opportunity. From a humanitarian perspective, we believe it is our duty to act on this incredible chance to reduce so much suffering for so little effort.

Compared to so many other hard-fought battles to reduce suffering, finding the right pill seems to many as almost too simple to accept.

As such, success in ending "the # 2 cause of animal suffering and death in the world" is up to us.

Good news #9

This is a permanent end to this colossal problem.

This is not a band-aid treatment or a short-term solution that needs to be repeated for the rest of our life, as many things are. Proper use of long-lasting birth control pills can bring about a permanent end to this problem.

Good news #10

We can achieve and realize massive, permanent benefits -- in our lifetime.

There are very few major problems in the world for which we can honestly say what is true about this project: We actually will be around to see the fruit of our labor.

Through this project we can not only end a massive problem, but we can end it in our lifetime. This alone is rare indeed.

We need your time, your talent and contacts, we need scientists, students, donations of any amount and your input.

Who can genuinely allow him/herself to think that finding a birth control formula that lasts six months is literally impossible?
